HR TERMS, EXPLAINED

Probation Period

A probation period is the starting phase of a job, usually lasting 3 to 6 months. During the probation period, the company checks if the employee is the right fit for the role.

During the probation period, the employee's work, behaviour, and skills are closely observed. Notice periods and exit rules are usually simpler and faster during the probation period compared to after confirmation. At the end of the probation period, the employee is either confirmed, given more time, or let go. Certain benefits may only apply fully once the employee's probation period is completed.

Definitions are general guidance. Your organisation's policies and applicable local requirements determine how a term is used in practice.
