HRA (House Rent Allowance)
In simple words: HRA is the part of salary that’s meant to help an employee pay for their rent. It’s usually a percentage of the basic salary.
Example: If Amit’s basic is ₹20,000 and his company pays HRA at 40% of basic, he gets ₹8,000 a month as HRA.
Why it matters: HRA can reduce the tax an employee pays, but only under certain conditions, such as paying rent and choosing the right tax option. The rules can change, so employees should check what applies to them.
Common mistake: Assuming everyone gets the same HRA percentage. Companies decide their own, and tax benefits depend on the employee’s situation.
Definitions are general guidance. Your organisation's policies and applicable local requirements determine how a term is used in practice.
