Show Cause Notice

In simple words: A show cause notice is a formal letter asking an employee to explain their behaviour or a mistake, usually within a fixed time. It isn’t a punishment. It’s the chance to give their side before any action is taken.

Example: An employee is absent for several days without informing anyone. HR sends a show cause notice asking why, and gives a few days to reply.

Why it matters: Giving a fair chance to explain is an important step before any warning or disciplinary action, and it protects both the employee and the company. Because the wording can matter legally, it’s wise to have important notices reviewed by an advisor.

Definitions are general guidance. Your organisation's policies and applicable local requirements determine how a term is used in practice.
